Here’s a solid care guide for the L330a Panaque albomaculatus, also known as the Watermelon Pleco—a large, wood-eating pleco known for its unique pattern and bold presence.

Watermelon Pleco (L330a Panaque albomaculatus) Care Guide

Common Names:

  • Watermelon Pleco

  • L330 Pleco

  • Royal Watermelon Pleco

Scientific Name: Panaque albomaculatus (L-number: L330a)
Origin: Upper Orinoco River, Venezuela
Size: Up to 12–15 inches (30–38 cm)
Lifespan: 10–15+ years
Temperament: Peaceful but territorial with other plecos

Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: 125 gallons minimum for an adult

  • Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel

  • Decor:

    • Driftwood is essential—they eat wood and need it for digestion

    • Rock caves and hiding spots

    • Keep decor heavy and stable—they’re strong and can move things

  • Plants: Optional—may uproot or damage them

  • Lighting: Low to moderate

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 78–84°F (25.5–29°C)

  • pH: 6.2–7.5

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (5–15 dGH)

  • Filtration: Strong and efficient—these fish are messy and produce a lot of waste

  • Water Changes: 40–50% weekly

Diet

  • Feeding Style: Primarily wood-eating herbivore with some omnivorous behavior

  • Staple Diet:

    • Driftwood (must always be present)

    • Sinking algae wafers

    • Fresh vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach)

    • Occasional protein: shrimp pellets, bloodworms (not too much)

  • Feeding Frequency: Daily

Behavior & Tankmates

  • Temperament: Peaceful with most fish; may get territorial with other plecos

  • Activity: Mostly nocturnal, but will be active in dim lighting

  • Tankmates:

    • Peaceful cichlids, tetras, barbs, larger community fish

    • Avoid other large wood-eating plecos to prevent competition

    • Not suitable for small or delicate species

Care Tips

  • Driftwood is not optional—it’s part of their diet

  • Heavy filtration is a must—they poop a lot due to their wood diet

  • Provide multiple hiding spots to reduce stress and aggression

  • Keep tank covered—these plecos are strong and can jump

  • Handle with care—large individuals have spines that can get caught in nets
